Understanding the Image of M87*
In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope released an image of M87*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of M87. What is so important about this picture? What can we learn about black holes? Do the predictions of general relativity hold up in regions of extreme gravity?
This lesson helps students understand what makes the EHT so powerful and what can be learned about black holes by studying this image. Topics such as resolving power and curved spacetime are addressed as students examine the actual image released by the EHT Collaboration.
